Integrative Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Zinderman’s approach to pet holistic care integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine with conventional medicine and surgery to help your pet utilize their own natural energy to help heal their problems.

Our pet holistic care consultation includes a comprehensive physical exam. It may also consist of laboratory tests such as blood and urine tests, x-rays when indicated, acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapies, therapeutic lasers, pain management, and more. Dr. Zinderman’s Traditional Medicine & Acupuncture certifications come from the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.

Holistic Medicine

Indian Street Animal Clinic integrates Eastern and Western Veterinary Medicine to find the center and balance within your pet. This includes incorporating veterinary food therapy, Chinese herbal formulations, Acupuncture, and traditional Western modalities.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be used to help improve or cure problems your pet might have, including those related to the musculoskeletal, reproductive, neurological, or gastrointestinal systems. Acupuncture can also be used to manage pain and hasten recovery after surgery.

Acupuncture, which originated in China, has been used as a therapeutic treatment option for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body is composed of several pathways called “meridians,” along which energy flows. When disease is present, energy is interrupted, or unbalanced. Stimulating acupuncture points along the meridians can restore energy flow, resulting in improved or cured health issues.

Because the needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, they cause minimal or no pain and are generally well tolerated by pets. However, incorrect placement of the needle or inadequate sterilization can result in pain or complications, which is why you should only have a qualified practitioner perform acupuncture on your pet.

To determine if your pet’s condition(s) may be responsive to this treatment modality, please set up an exam with our veterinarian.

Laser Therapy

Pet laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive technology used to treat acute and chronic injuries, accelerate the healing process after surgery, and alleviate joint pain. It works by stimulating cell regeneration, increasing blood flow to the targeted area, and releasing the body’s own pain-relieving hormones.

The process generally takes 5-10 minutes, with most patients seeing positive effects after 3-5 uses. The treatment continues to relieve pain and fight inflammation for up to 24 hours following the session.

Conditions improved with laser therapy:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Post-surgical incisions and soft-tissue trauma
  • Arthritis and degenerative joint disease
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Neuromuscular disease

Laser therapy is normally combined with other types of veterinary medicine, including pharmaceutical regimens and alternative treatments. Its broad biochemical benefits and lack of adverse side effects have made it the preferred post-operative rehab method in veterinary medicine.

Biological Effects of High-Power Laser Therapy

Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth – Accelerated cellular reproduction and growth. Cells of cartilage, bone, tendons, ligaments and muscles are repaired faster as a result of exposure to laser light.

Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation – Laser therapy reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage and acute and chronic inflammatory processes.

Anti-Inflammation – Laser light therapy has an anti-inflammatory effect, and causes vasodilation and activation of the lymphatic drainage system, reducing swelling caused by biomechanical stress, trauma, overuse, or systemic conditions.

Analgesia – Laser therapy has a beneficial effect on pain through the suppression of nerve signal transmission over unmyelinated c-fibers that transmit pain to the brain. Another pain-blocking mechanism involves the production of high levels of pain-killing chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins from the brain and adrenal gland.

Improved Vascular Activity – Laser light will significantly increase the formation of new capillaries (angiogenesis) in damaged tissue which will speed up the healing process.

Increased Metabolic Activity – Laser therapy creates higher outputs of specific enzymes.

Improved Nerve Function – Accelerates the process of nerve cell regeneration and increases the amplitude of action potentials.

Immunoregulation – Stimulation of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes

Stimulates Trigger Points and Acupuncture Points – Stimulates muscle trigger points, restoration of muscular tonus and balance.
